2019 Art trends

2019 Art Trend Summary

Since 2019 is coming to and end it will conclude the year and thus the decade so I thought it would be a nice change of pace to take a look at all the different trends that were explored in art throughout 2019. Aside from these trends a lot of the themes that have been explored relate to things that are political in nature such as climate change, race, gender and technology. these themes combined with the way these popular techniques create some very interesting results.

Maximalism: From the title you can probably assume that this is the opposite of minimalism due to the crazy amounts of texture, color, patterns and things keeping the artwork busy and loud. The photograph above is from artist Shephanie Syjuco who always returns the fabrics and articles of clothing she uses back to the store as to not waste any materials which ties into the environmental theme I talked about above that is prevailing in artwork. Maximalism is found in a lot of collages and mixed media artwork due to its amalgamation of a lot of different parts.

Metals and gold tones: Gold and other metals have been used in artwork for a very long time as far back as the ancient civilizations as the Aztecs and in ancient China as well. Just because these metals have been used for hundreds of years doesn't mean they are not still relevant and just as inspirational when used in art that is contemporary and modern. Looking at the first painting by Titti Garelli we see how she used gold to create a royal looking piece of art that used metallics to pop out and emphasize the important parts. The Gold champagne, the gold ruffled collar and the gold hair all stand out among the darker blacks and navy colors throughout the piece. In the second piece I looked at, Suffering Moon the artist not only took use of gold but used a metallic silver with darker undertones to create good contrast to show important details in the divots and craters as well.

Botanicals: Nature has been studied ever since the creation of man and this has not stopped even though we are becoming a more technologically dependent society. The use of plants in artwork goes to also show the theme of environmentalism and how the world can appreciate nature and its prodect even though they may be dwindling with time.
